Nike, Naples

gilded bronze on red marble
29″ h., ca. 1890
Chiurazzi foundry, Naples

This resplendent figure of the Greek goddess of victory replicates the features of a small, Classical Era statue now in the Naples Archaeological Museum. Almost certainly cast by that city’s Churazzi Foundry, established in 1840 by Gennaro Chiurazzi (1840 – 1906), a student of classicizing Neapolitan sculptor PIetro Masulli (d. 1876).  More recently, Chiurazzi was commissioned by the Getty to provide a large number of Classical bronze statues for the Villa in Malibu, California.
